I drove from my house about 1.5 miles to the trailhead located in Anthem Country Club off of Silver Pine and began a 2.1 mile hike that, plotting it out on Google Earth, gains about 1,300 feet in elevation.  I decided I would jog when I could and move as quickly as I could when the terrain got a little tougher, and taking that approach, I was able to reach the flag in about 45 mins.  Perhaps I might have made better time had I not stopped to take pictures, which I have included.

I met a group of 3 60-something gentlemen who routinely do this and explained that there is also a loop that works around the base of Daisy Mtn. that can be included as part of the hike and brings the distance somewhere closer to 11 miles.  I hope when I’m 60-something that I’m still able to keep up with guys like that.

There is an American flag planted in the North Peak of Daisy Mtn. (the North Peak appears to be just slightly higher than the South Peak) that makes for a good place to catch your breath, have a snack, and decide whether you want to turn around, or keep going.  I had work to do and I was tired, so my decision was easy.  I parted ways with the gentlemen that I had met on the way up to the flag, and headed back down the mountain which would have been easier going would it not have been for the loose and slippery terrain.

All in all, it is a great hike for those who don’t mind the wear and tear on the knees and ankles, and the views are extremely rewarding.  The people you meet along the way are friendly like neighbors–well, I guess if you live in Anthem, AZ, they ARE your neighbors.

Sure, it will still be over a 100 degrees every day this week, but if you are active at all and have been getting out there all Summer before the sun comes up to fry you in order to walk, run, or take a vigorous mountain bike ride as I do most mornings, you will be the first to be rewarded before everyone else.  Then you’ll start to see the folks who’ve shut themselves in the air conditioning all Summer and have now decided to start an exercise regiment–these are the same folks who will decide it’s too cold when that night-time temperature hits 40 degrees–and these people are easy to spot, but that’s the subject for another post.  Anyway, the long and the short of it is that Fall is almost here, and I can practically smell it in the air, and it’s the time of year where we finally remember why we subject ourselves to the Summer heat.  It’s the start of the best time of the year in Arizona.

Mitochondrial Disease limits the the mitochondria’s ability to convert food into energy.  To me,  Mitochondrial Disease was obscure, but when I found out that mitochondrial dysfunction is an underlying cause behind Alzheimer’s Disease, Parkinson’s Disease, ALS, Autism, Spectrum Disorders, and some Cancers, I realized that Mitochondrial Disease is anything but obscure.

Mylee and her parents have shown tremendous courage throughout this trial, and there will undoubtedly be more obstacles further down the road for this family and others who are experiencing similar challenges.  I ask that, if you have the opportunity please support this little girl; this family; and those like them who may be going through the same things.  If you can be in Tempe, on Sunday morning between 8 – 9, go and register, but if you can’t, no donation is too small.

Here is a picture of one I took flying over my home one morning.  It was so close, and perhaps the picture doesn’t do it enough justice, but I could hear a normal volume conversation from the basket of the balloon.  In fact, in their flight path, they nearly touched the roof of the neighbors across the street.  Personally, unless I’m in a large plane, I prefer to keep my feet as close to the ground as possible, but this is kind of ridiculous, don’t you think?

In this photo taken from my front door, you can see that the balloon in the previous photo landed in the street directly to the south of my home.  These pilots are quite good, and if the wind is right, they can land them quite literally on a dime.

When we’re not dodging balloons, we’re working with clients to find the best deals in Phoenix real estate, or we’re helping them sell their homes, but we think it’s important to get out and smell the roses occasionally.
